Game abandoned as Centenary Stadium posts give way

The match between Qrendi and leaders Qormi was abandoned after fifteen minutes play as one of the goal posts gave way, tilting backwards.

It all happened on Qrendi's equaliser when Santos Da Hora finished entangled in the net after scoring from close range, with the posts giving way under pressure.

Referee Johnson waited for about eight minutes, in which attempts were made to put the posts back in order, but it was evident that it was impossible to put the posts back in shape, and the referee had no option other to abandon the match.

Qormi had taken an eleventh minute lead through Caetano Da Silva following some good work on the right by Luke Busuttil.

Nine-man San Gwann gain precious point

Nine-man San Gwann sprang a surprise yesterday snatching a point against Melita in an entertaining match, especially in the second half. For Melita it was a lost golden opportunity to gain three points and move to safer waters, against a side who had to use iots third goalkeeper, sixteen year old Jake Pisani, who was only beaten from the penalty spot.

On eight minutes Melita had their first open chance with Alan Borg Olivier's shot from an ideal position saved by Camilleri. The match however failed to lift off with Melita always having the edge but they never tested the opposing goalkeeper.

San Gwann had some good runs from Jan Tanti but the side lacked punch and the Melita rearguard was in full control. On 38 minutes a Cornago freekick went slightly over the bar. Two minutes later Sann Gwann were reduced to ten players when Mikas Kura received a second booking for a foul on Luke Micallef.

Eight minutes into the second San Gwann were down to nine when their goalkeeper was sent off for stopping Jean Pierre Attard who was heading for goal. But on 64 minutes nine-man San Gwann took the lead when Andrew Abela headed beutifully home.

Melita attacked desperately with goalkeeper Pisani denying Axl Xuereb from close range. Ten minutes from time Melita saved their blushes when they were awarded a penalty for a handling infringement and Luke Micallef fired home from the spot.

Four minutes from time Melita's Daniel Cutajar was sent off for dissent.

Ten-man Zabbar win relegation clash

Zabbar St.Patrick registered quite a feat yesterday beating dirtect opponents Rabat after playing for around 80 minutes with a man less.

This was a vital victory for Alfred Attard's boys in this relegation clash, as they now stir six points clear from the same Magpies who are in a desperate situation.

Zabbar had a good chance on five minutes with a Shalon Diacono shot just missing the target.

But five minutes later Zabbar received a major setback as they were reduced to ten men when Shawn Cesare was sent off for a nasty tackle on Micallef.

However on thirty minutes Zabbar were unlucky when a Karl Sacco freekick hit the crossbar and from the rebound Zammit turned into a corner Micallef's header.

From the corner kick Zabbar were awarded a penalty for a handling infringement and from the spot Kurt Borg made no mistake.

In the second half Rabat failed to make an impact and the Zabbar defence was always in control, evan though as expected Rabat hald the initiative.

Rabat only came close a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time when a Zabbar defender cleared the ball off the goal line and from the rebound Joseph Caruana's shot finished against the upright.
