An open day will be held at the Cittadella in Gozo to celebrate 150 years since the citadel changed from a military installation to a civilian area.

The change of roles took place in April 1868.

Gozo Minister Justyne CAruana announced that an open day filed with educational and cultural activities will be held on Saturday 7 April.

The main event will be a seminar held at the Ċittadella Arts Centre, where a number of experts will deliver informative sessions on the fortifications of the walled city, the discoveries made during its restoration and the history of the citadel.

A number of historical sites managed by Heritage Malta will be open free of charge.

These include the Museum of Archaeology, the Natural History Museum and the Old Prison.

There will also be a number of re-enactments demonstrating life in the Gran Castello and the surrounding streets in the old days.

An exhibition of architectural plans with an emphasis on the military aspect of the Cittadella will be held at the Visitors Centre.

In the afternoon a team of educators from the National Literacy Agency will hold an activity for children aged between 6 and 12, titled Xalata ta’ Kitba.

Minister Caruana said the event aims to ensure that the Cittadella is truly given back to the people. More activities will be held in the near future.
