Spanish La Liga: Griezmann scores 1st goal since World Cup in Atletico win

Antoine Griezmann scored his first goal since helping France win the World Cup in July when he gave Atletico Madrid a 1-0 victory over crosstown rival Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

Griezmann used his left boot to sweep in a header by Stefan Savic and break the deadlock at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in the 63rd minute.

The France striker, who scored four goals along with Kylian Mbappe to lead his country to the world title, failed to score in Atletico's 4-2 win over Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup earlier this month and its 1-1 draw at Valencia in the opening round of the Spanish league last week.

Griezmann, 27, turned down an offer to join Barcelona this summer after Atletico finished runner-up to the Catalan club last season.

Atletico's defense didn't concede a dangerous shot on goal until the final minutes when goalkeeper Jan Oblak had to make three saves to protect the lead.

Thomas Lemar, the France forward who left Monaco in the off-season, almost put the hosts ahead in the first half but was denied by goalkeeper Alberto Garcia's one-handed save.

Elsewhere, Real Betis drew 0-0 at Alaves.

Barcelona visits promoted Valladolid later as it seeks a second win to start the league campaign.
