Champions Valletta cantered through their third consecutive victory as they overcame a poor Senglea side 5-1 to move onto the 9-point mark in the standings.

Bojan Kaljevic scored a hat-trick and the other recently signed striker Mario Fontanella got a brace as the citizens overpowered the Athletic, who managed to score a consolation goal a few minutes from the end.

The citizens are occupying second place on a better goal difference than Balzan, Sliema, Hibernians and Birkirkara - also on nine points - but Balzan, Sliema and Birkirkara have  match in hand. Gzira United are on top with 10 points.

Senglea remain in bottom place with just one point from five matches.

Valletta had Jean Borg replacing the injured Ryan Camilleri. On the other hand, Brian Volpini was back for Senglea as he replaced Manuel Guillari.

This was a one-way traffic affair with Valletta dominating from start to finish scoring five goals before Senglea replied with a goal of their own for some little consolation a few minutes from the end.

The champions now seem to be well on their way to a full recovery after having lost their opening two matches against Sliema and Hibernians.

Yesterday, it was easy going against the bottom club, but it is obvious that the Whites have regained the confidence which seemed to have been lacking in those opening two matches.

Valletta took an early 5th minute lead through Mario Fontanella who received a cross from Malano to beat goalie Matthew Farrugia.

From then on they never looked back. Kaljevic scored twice in the space of two minutes between the 12th and 14th minutes, the first from an assist by Pena Beltre and his second from a Fontanella pass.

The same Fontanella scored his second goal on 26 minutes. He beat the Senglea goalie after a cross from Joseph Zerafa.

Valletta's domination continued in the second half, but they only managed to add one goal to their tally as Kaljevic obtained his hat-trick in the 54th minute with a powerful shot following .a good pass by Miguel Alba.

Two minutes from the end, Braian Volpini managed to find the City net off a Matias Garcia pass for some consolation for the Athletic.
