Paris Saint-Germain's attacking might overwhelmed Red Star Belgrade 6-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday, with Neymar netting a hat trick that included two brilliant free kicks.

PSG coach Thomas Tuchel went with his strongest line-up up front with Neymar, World Cup star Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria playing in a 4-2-3-1 formation. They all scored in the first half except for Mbappe, who had to wait until the 70th minute for his goal following superb approach play from Neymar.

"I really liked the fact it was a team effort tonight, but Neymar was outstanding. He was just sensational, magnificent," Tuchel said. "You can sense that he's hungry, that he wants to make the difference and win the ball back."

Red star coach Vladan Milojevic acknowledged his defense could not cope with Neymar.

"It wouldn't be fair just to talk about Neymar, but everything revolved around him," Milojevic said. "He's on another level."

After losing their opening group game to Liverpool, PSG played with the kind of intensity that has sometimes been lacking against weaker teams in past seasons, where it has failed to get beyond the quarterfinals of the competition despite huge expenditure on players and wages.

"It was a really top performance because we created a lot of chances. But also we won 71 percent of our tackles in the first half, which was extraordinary," Tuchel said. "I was most pleased with the second half because we kept going."

Neymar, who scored twice in the French league last weekend, opened the scoring with his first free kick after 20 minutes. The Brazil star hardly took a run up and used his exquisite touch to perfectly flight the ball into the left corner.

Two minutes later, he added his second.

Swapping passes with Mbappe, he sprinted into the penalty area to meet the teenager's quick cross from the right with a finish into the roof of the net.

Cavani beat two players before scoring with a deflected shot in the 37th, and Di Maria astutely guided in the fourth shortly before the break.

Neymar created the fifth in style.

He showed great close control to dribble to the edge of the area, and then cleverly flicked a ball over the defense. Left back Bernat read the pass and cut the ball back to give Mbappe an easy tap in.

After Mbappe missed a sitter — his second of the night — Red Star's midfielder Marko Marin rifled a shot home in the 74th.

Neymar went off to a standing ovation with about 10 minutes left, just after curling in even better free kick into the top right corner.

Later Wednesday, Napoli hosted Liverpool in the other Group C game.

Red Star's defeat could have been heavier but Mbappe, midfielder Adrien Rabiot — and even Neymar — all missed good chances.

PSG has won nine of 10 games this season, scoring 35 goals. But the 3-2 loss at Liverpool serves as a reminder it has trouble winning the big games.

Red Star last played in the European Cup in 1991 as holders, came through four qualifying rounds to reach the group stage and drew its opener 0-0 at home to Napoli.

"We had two players who had never played in the Champions League," Milojevic said. "If this (defeat) is what it takes to make us better, it will be worth it. We shouldn't forget we were playing PSG, who are going for the Champions League."

Red Star's fans were officially banned from travelling for this match and the next away game, after causing trouble during its playoff at Salzburg.

Still, quite a few managed to get tickets independently and sat among PSG fans at the Parc des Princes stadium.

A strong police presence was in place around the stadium to prevent any potential clashes — with both sides reputed for having hooligan elements among their supporters.

The Red Star fans made their presence heard when Marin scored, but there were no incidents between fans.

Schalke continues recovery with 1-0 win over Lokomotiv

Weston McKennie's late header gave Schalke a 1-0 win over Lokomotiv Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday as the German team continued to recover from a poor start to the season.

Neither team had much cutting edge as chances were missed on a wet night in Moscow, but McKennie made the difference in the 88th minute when the 20-year-old U.S. midfielder leapt unmarked at the far post to head in Yevhen Konoplyanka's corner.

The win leaves Schalke with four points in Group D and is its second victory after a six-game winless run which included five straight defeats in the Bundesliga.

"This important win should change the direction our season is going," McKennie said. "We haven't had the best start and will definitely do better."

Playing its first Champions League home group game since 2003, Lokomotiv had the better of Schalke in the first half but its finishing was poor. The Russian champion recorded just one shot on target all game when Schalke keeper Ralf Faehrmann parried Dmitry Barinov's shot from the edge of the penalty area in the 27th minute.

With striker Fyodor Smolov out injured, "we didn't have forwards who could have come on and added some spice," Lokomotiv's veteran coach Yuri Syomin said, adding that his team was so tired it lost focus for the corner which led to McKennie's winning goal.

"You lose concentration when you're tired and I think our players were very tired in the last eight or 10 minutes," Syomin said.

Lokomotiv has now lost its opening two Champions League games. Moored in midtable in the Russian league, it is struggling to repeat the form that saw it claim a surprise title last season.

Porto hosts Galatasaray later Wednesday in the other Group D game.

Inter rallies again to beat PSV 2-1 in Champions League

Inter Milan rallied from a goal down to beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1 on Wednesday and record its second straight come-from-behind win in the Champions League.

Pablo Rosario gave PSV the lead in the 27th minute with a dipping 25-meter shot over Samir Handanovic. Radja Nainggolan equalized one minute before halftime, capitalizing on a fumble by PSV goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet.

Zoet was also involved in Mauro Icardi's winning goal on the hour, colliding with defender Daniel Schwaab as both PSV players tried to cut out a long pass by Matias Vecino. The ball bounced free to leave the Inter captain with a simple tap-in as Zoet looked on, holding his head in his hands.

At the other end, Handanovic made a great reflex save in the 79th minute to preserve Inter's lead, diving to his left to block an athletic overhead kick by substitute Donyell Malen.

"It was a good match, we showed character and a good mentality," said Inter coach Luciano Spalletti.

The victory took Inter to second in Group B, behind Barcelona on goal difference after Lionel Messi's team beat Tottenham 4-2 at Wembley.

It was another resilient display from Spalletti's team, which staged a late rally two weeks ago to beat Tottenham 2-1 in their first Group B match, with Icardi scoring a spectacular volley for the equalizer.

Inter, with Dutchman Stefan de Vrij at center back, defended strongly and Nainggolan dominated the midfield battles to give Inter the edge in a fast-paced, open match that saw plenty of chances from both teams.

PSV, the 1988 European champion, has now failed to win any of its last eight Champions League matches and has no points after two defeats this season, following a 4-0 loss to Barcelona. Mark van Bommel's team next plays Tottenham in a matchup of two teams yet to win a point in Group B.

PSV took the lead when Mexico forward Hirving Lozano cut in from the left and tried to find space to shoot. When Inter defenders closed him down, he slid the ball to Rosaria whose shot sailed over Handanovic.

Referee Milorad Mazic showed Handanovic a yellow card in the 41st minute when the keeper rushed out of his area and handled the ball to end a promising PSV attack.

Minutes later, Inter was level after Zoet failed to gather a shot by Kwadwo Asamoah and then blocked a follow-up effort by Icardi only to see the ball fall to Nainggolan, who fired low into the corner.

Gaston Pereira came close to putting PSV back ahead four minutes after the break but his curling shot hit the outside of the post.

But it was Icardi who found the net after Zoet's collision with Schwaab to seal Inter's victory.

Midfielder Matteo Politano showed a safe pair of hands in the second half when he caught a plastic beaker of beer thrown onto the pitch.

Confident Dortmund beats Monaco 3-0 in Champions League

Paco Alcacer made up for a missed penalty by scoring on his first start for Borussia Dortmund, helping the German team beat Monaco 3-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Spanish striker, who joined Dortmund from Barcelona in the offseason, drove his penalty against the crossbar midway through the second half, then made up for it by eluding two defenders before blasting in Dortmund's second goal.

Marco Reus completed the scoring in injury time as the Bundesliga leader earned its second win from two Champions League games and maintained its unbeaten start to the season.

The previous meeting between the sides in April 2017 was marred by a bomb attack on Dortmund's team bus on its way to the stadium for their quarterfinal.

Mario Goetze was left out of Dortmund's squad for the third straight game, while the team was also without the injured Christian Pulisic, Shinji Kagawa and Marcel Schmelzer.

Monaco had more chances early on and Youri Tielemans drew a fine save from Roman Buerki inside 20 minutes.

"We showed patience. We knew it would be a difficult game," Buerki said.

Alcacer went close with a curling shot after half an hour, but it sailed just wide of the far post, before Marius Wolf went even closer with a shot that Diego Benaglio did brilliantly to stop going in.

Benaglio was forced off afterward after suffering an apparent groin injury after making the save. The former Wolfsburg goalkeeper was given a round of applause by the home fans.

Dortmund coach Lucien Favre brought on Jacob Bruun Larsen at halftime and the 20-year-old wasted little time in marking his debut in the competition by breaking the deadlock after being set up by fellow youngster Jadon Sancho.

"I'm delighted," Bruun Larsen said. "It was an awesome moment."

The 18-year-old Sancho, who extended his contract the day before, now has seven assists in nine competitive games for Dortmund.

Alcacer missed his penalty after Reus was brought down by Kamil Glik and Sancho missed another chance before the home side's pressure was finally rewarded with a second goal.

Messi double helps Barcelona to 4-2 win at Tottenham

Lionel Messi received a helping hand from Luis Suarez's clever dummies to score twice and ensure Barcelona overcame Tottenham 4-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Suarez wisely left the ball drift past him to Messi to claim the second-half goals this virtuoso performance warranted on the Argentine's return to Wembley Stadium seven years after scoring in the final when Barcelona beat Manchester United.

In front of 82,137 fans, Messi was also selfless, helping to set up Philippe Coutinho to score into a net unguarded by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the second minute.

While the opener owed much to Lloris rashly rushing off his line, the second was pure artistry. Messi also started the move that saw Suarez and Coutinho combine to set up Ivan Rakitic to volley superbly into the top of the net.

When Messi hit the post twice at the start of the second half it looked like he wouldn't come close to repeating his hat trick in the 4-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven in the group opener.

Harry Kane pulled one back in the 52nd minute, but Messi started and completed the move four minutes later that restored Barcelona's two-goal lead.

By the time Jordi Alba virtually cut the ball back from the byline, Messi had darted into the box and both Coutinho and Suarez left it for the five-time world player of the year to finish.

The prospect of a Tottenham comeback flickered again when Erik Lamela netted in the 66th but Messi had the final say in the 90th to snuff out the resistance. As Suarez let the ball go past him, the unmarked Messi tapped into an open net.

It left Tottenham on zero points in Group B. Inter Milan, which beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1, joined Barcelona on six points.

The quality of the field didn't match the spectacle in a stadium where this game wasn't even due to be played.

With the rebuilding of White Hart Lane overrunning, Wembley is still Tottenham's temporary home. It's not just the additional burden from unexpected Tottenham games accounting for the brown, dead grass across the center. It is less than two weeks since a boxing ring was constructed for the Anthony Joshua-Alexander Povetkin world heavyweight title fight.

Griezmann leads Atletico Madrid to 3-1 win over Club Brugge

Antoine Griezmann scored a goal in each half — including the 8,000th Champions League goal — to lead Atletico Madrid to a hard-fought 3-1 win over Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Griezmann opened the scoring in the first half and got another goal midway through the second half after Club Brugge equalized with a superb long-range shot by Arnaut "Danjuma" Groeneveld just before halftime. Atletico's third goal was scored by Jorge "Koke" Resurreccion in stoppage time.

Atletico was struggling to break through the defense of the Belgian champions when Griezmann scored the decisive goal with a shot from inside the area after a pass by Diego Costa, who had to be immediately substituted with an apparent muscle injury.

It was an important victory for Atletico, which faltered against the team considered the weakest in its group last season. It was held to two draws then by Azerbaijani club Qarabag, results that led to the team's elimination in the group stage.

The victory also extended Atletico's unbeaten streak in all competitions to six matches this season.

Club Brugge, back in the Champions League group stage after a one-year absence, was trying to halt a seven-game losing streak in group games in the competition.

In the other Group A match on Wednesday, Borussia Dortmund defeated Monaco 3-0 to stay level with Atletico at the top with six points each. Monaco and Club Brugge are yet to win any points.

It had been difficult for Atletico in the first half against Brugge until Griezmann got on the board in the 28th minute at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. He controlled the ball with his chest after a cross toward the far post and calmly sent a low side-footed shot into the opposite corner, scoring his first Champions League goal of the season.

The second, coming from inside the area in the 67th, was the 8,000th since the competition began in a new format in the 1992-1993 season.

The visitors equalized with a tremendous goal by Danjuma, whose booming shot from a difficult angle on the left flank went into the far corner of Atletico 'keeper Jan Oblak's goal. The goal stunned the Madrid crowd and ignited the very loud Belgian fans who made the trip to the Metropolitano stadium in the Spanish capital.

It was only the second goal conceded at home by Diego Simeone's Atletico this season.

Simeone started with three men at the back but added Filipe Luis as a left back in the second half, reverting to a four-man defense. The move allowed Atletico to press forward more easily and create more scoring chances.

Griezmann also had a 20th-minute goal disallowed for offside.

Atletico had opened with a 2-1 win at Monaco.

Late Insigne strike earns Napoli 1-0 win over Liverpool

Lorenzo Insigne scored in the 90th minute to give Napoli a 1-0 win over a surprisingly listless Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Having threatened all night without anything to show for it besides Dries Mertens' volley off the crossbar, Napoli finally broke through when Insigne redirected a cross from Jose Callejon by the far post.

The victory vaulted Napoli atop Group C with four points, one ahead of Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, which beat Red Star Belgrade 6-1 in the other group match Wednesday. Red Star, which held Napoli to a scoreless draw in the opening round of matches, is last with one point.

With Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita taken off injured on a stretcher early in the first half, the Reds were unable to place a single shot on target before the break.

Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly didn't allow Mohamed Salah, Liverpool's most dangerous striker, any room at all.

One Liverpool fan was injured in clashes with Napoli supporters the night before the match. There was also a flare thrown into the area where Liverpool supporters sat inside the stadium.

Porto beats Galatasaray 1-0 to take group lead in CL

Moussa Marega scored a second-half winner to give Porto a 1-0 win over Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday, leaving the Portuguese club tied for the Group D lead.

Marega headed home the only goal after a corner by Alex Telles in the 49th minute at the Estadio do Dragao in Porto.

It was Porto's first game without striker Vincent Aboubakar, who will be sidelined for several months after tearing a knee ligament.

The win left Porto even with Schalke on four points after two games. Galatasaray dropped to third place with three points. Lokomotiv Moscow, which lost 1-0 to Schalke at home in the other group game Wednesday, stayed in last place.

Porto had opened with a 1-1 draw at Schalke, while Galatasaray routed Lokomotiv Moscow 3-0 in Russia.
