Nationalist MP Claudio Grech this afternoon pushed away the idea that he should seek taking over the leadership of the Nationalist Party.

The idea was put forward by Malta Today co-owner Saviour Balzan in his personal blog. Balzan wrote that the PN needs a new leader, and he should be Claudio Grech. The call came at the end of a week in which it was confirmed that the wife of PN leader Adrian Delia had filed for separation.

Writing on his Facebook profile this afternoon, Grech said that the last thing the PN needs is speculation on its leadership. He said Delia was elected in the most open and representative election for political party leadership ever, and the duty of every MP is to be an integral part of the party’s work.

While appreciating all people who believed in his qualities, he said that he took his decision on the party leadership more than a year ago. Grech had been one of the people who were being mentioned for the leadership when Simon Busuttil resigned following the worst defeat the PN suffered in history.

Grech said that his priority, as it had been last year, was to serve as a voice to his constituents during this legislature and that, as an MP, give his contribution for the PN to strengthen its political base and evolve into an alternative government. We can achieve this only if we work together, Grech write.

He said all leaders he worked with could confirm that he gave his utmost to the party and will continue to do so until his last day in politics.
