Independent MEP candidate Arnold Cassola has written to the Chief Electoral Commissioner and the Commissioner for Standards in Public life, asking them to look into a video of Joseph Muscat chanting during a party held in Girgenti Palace.

The video, which has gone viral on social media, shows an ecstatic Prime Minister jumping and chanting ‘ma taghmlu xejn ma’ Joseph taghna,’ along with other invitees.

His wife, Michelle Muscat, is also seen in the video chanting along with a champagne bottle in hand.

The couple’s children are also seen in the video, which was filmed inside Girgenti Palace, the Prime Minister’s official summer residence.

In his letter to Electoral Commissioner Joseph Church and the Commissioner for Standards in Public Life, George Hyzler, Cassola said the video shows the Muscats chanting partisan songs in state property.

He asked them to open an investigation into the “unethical” behaviour and the “illegal donation” of state property to be used for partisan activities which, he said, goes against the party financing law.

The video brought the ire of several Nationalist politicians, including Jason Azzopardi who said the event had taken place in the former chapel of Girgenti Palace. “A suitable setting indeed. Pls watch & appreciate the gravitas,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
