Social media allegations: Ministry says sex education in schools ‘decent, suitable’ for age group

The Education Ministry has criticised ‘false and irresponsible’ posts on Facebook that throw bad light on the teaching of sexuality in government schools.

In the past hours, a mother has uploaded a Facebook post saying that her daughter is being subjected to ‘diabolical’ teaching about sexual situations for which she is too young.

In a statement, the Education Ministry said that the syllabus for year 6 discusses the development of sexuality within the context of a relationship built on love. The way the subject is taught is “decent and suitable” for children at that age.

Any reference to gay persons is made appropriately as expected in a tolerant society which supports diversity.

Parents are informed about the subject in a special meeting held specifically for them, and the syllabus is available online, while the workbook is also public and made available to the students, contrary to what the parent suggested in her post.

The ministry expressed its disappointment at the irresponsible way parents make use of the social media to give false information.
