Spurring local economic development has led to the revisiting and revitalisation of Malta’s few industrial areas in recent years, Economy Minister Chris Cardona said today.
The smart use of such limited land available requires the incubation of commercial entities that promote technology diversification and improve Malta’s economic competitive environment, he added while visiting the Stargate Studios Malta at the Mosta Technopark.
“As Malta’s economy graduates from labour-intensive to technology-intensive industries, the developmental strategy for the Mosta Technopark has expanded so that it now houses high-tech and specialisation industries, that in a broader view, diversify and create advantages for Malta’s economy,” said Minister Cardona.
Stargate Studios Malta is Mosta Technopark’s most recent tenant. It is a high-tech production company offering visual effects and production services to the film and television industries all over the world. Stargate Studios Malta is part of a much larger international group of studios with its main office situated in Los Angeles, California. Local production company The Bigger Picture partnered with the international group in 2012 to form Stargate Studios Malta.
The Maltese studio is the European hub of this network, working on an average of three shows simultaneously. The studio employs around 30 full-timers and has developed training programmes which will lead to the setting up of a training academy that will bridge the local skills gap.
“A technopark truly contributes to Malta’s economy when it houses not only production commercialisation, but accommodates research and development, education and training, technology innovation and transfer. We are glad to see the cultivation of the Mosta Technopark bearing fruit and diversifying Malta’s economic portfolio,” the Minister said.
Stargate have worked on productions such as I Medici, Don Matteo, Paul Apostle of Christ and The Royals.
