Prime Minister Joseph Muscat met the Prime Minister of North Macedonia Zoran Zaev in New York.

The two sides discussed the decision that needs to be taken by the European Council on the opening of negotiations with North Macedonia for membership in the European Union.

Prime Minister Muscat reiterated Malta’s support to the North Macedonian request, especially after the country made a slate of reforms, including the change in name as encouraged by the European Union.

Prime Minister Zaev thanked Malta for its ongoing support and said that North Macedonia is open for more relations and business between the two countries.

Muscat was accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Carmelo Abela.

He is in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
