Today, 50% of the Marsa Junction Project is complete, Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg said.

"A little over a month ago we were here to inaugurate the first structures; today we are witnessing the placing of beams on the third and longest flyover which we had announced would be opened by the end of January. Today we can announce that this structure will be completed by the end of this year, a month ahead of schedule,” Borg said while visiting the site of this €70 million investment which he described as the one that would forever alter our country’s infrastructure.

The work being carried out today caused long traffic jams in the south of Malta for drivers wanting to go towards the north.

He said that once this flyover is complete, the Addolorata traffic lights system can be completely eliminated, and this will again drastically reduce travelling time for thousands of people.

Minister Borg said that after the opening of the first structures, work continued at a constant pace and said that the 120,000 people passing through the route daily can bear witness to this.

He explained that the third flyover structure which will be completed this year will create a direct Northbound connection between Triq Aldo Moro and Vjal Santa Luċija and will be the longest one with the length of 2 football grounds, i.e. 227 metres, until it joins the highest part of the first flyover in Triq Aldo Moro, one of the two already being used.

The Minister said, “This project is already bearing the desired fruit. More than half a million people have used the flyovers we opened, more than half a million people have already saved 12,000 hours of traffic. We are speaking about people that were always forgotten, but this Government chose not to forget them and our vision for our country is wider and looks further, because we will not stop with this junction,” said Minister Borg.

He stressed how important it is for the entire country to have efficient, high-quality and safer infrastructure and made reference to the ongoing investment nearby on the Santa Luċija tunnels as well as to the €64 million investment in 14 arterial road projects in 2019. Minister Borg also mentioned a number of other projects like the Central Link Project, the project between Kirkop and the Airport and the St Andrew’s project, apart from the work being done in rural and residential roads.

“Are we moving quickly? Yes, we are, and we will not stop working and we will not stop looking ahead because we want our people to benefit from the infrastructure they deserve immediately. We are doing this in the most responsible way, and we are delivering quality infrastructure even for alternative means, infrastructure that our country could only dream of before,” continued Minister Borg while reiterating that he is looking ahead to more work and thanking Infrastructure Malta’s leadership and the rest of the team working towards this Government’s vision.

Additional information about the third flyover

·         The third flyover – the longest flyover (to be opened end 2019) will create a direct Northbound connection between Triq Aldo Moro and Vjal Santa Luċija.

·         Deck made of 65 concrete beams

·         227 metre route (length of 2 football grounds) from Vjal Santa Luċija until it joins the highest part of the first flyover in Triq Aldro Moro, one of the two already being used

·         Some of the beams of this structure which were put in place today are the longest concrete beams used in this project (31.2 metres). There are 14 total concrete beams of this length.

·         It will rest on 16 columns, 12 of which have already been built and for the foundations 66 concrete pillars have been placed underground.

·         The highest part of its deck will be 15.9 metres above the road passing beneath it.

·         This flyover requires a ramp from the Vjal Sant Luċija end.
