Just when you thought it would not get worse, Infrastructure Malta has announced fresh diversions affecting traffic in connection with major road projects taking place.

New Santa Lucija Underpass Project diversions:  From Monday November 11, 10am, and for the next few months, northbound carriageway of Tal-Barrani Road will be diverted to an alternative route through Santa Lucija, towards Hal Luqa Road and Garibaldi Road.

Drivers are urged to follow diversion signs in Dawret it-Torri Street and Il-Prinjoli Street.  No access from Tal-Barrani Road northbound to the Santa Lucija roundabout. Shuttle bus service for pedestrians  travelling between Santa Lucija, Tarxien and Paola available Monday to Saturday, 8am-11am and 4pm-7pm.

Whilst these diversions are in place, Infrastructure Malta said it will continue building the underground walk-through culverts extending from Marsa to Santa Lucija, for some of the most important high voltage cables of the national electricity grid

“We will soon also start excavating and building the two road tunnels connecting Santa Lucija Avenue with Tal-Barrani Road,” IM said.

As from this morningand for the next 3 weeks, part of the southbound carriageway of San Tumas Road, Qormi to Luqa, will be diverted through Guzeppi Ellul Street, which runs in parallel to it. Follow diversion signs to Santa Lucija, Luqa, Gudja and the Malta International Airport.

This diversion is required, IM said, to continue the €9.5 million reconstruction of Hal Qormi Road and San Tumas Road, the arterial route between Qormi, HalFarrug and Luqa. "We are widening these roads to four lanes, with improved bus lay bys and a segregated cycle track, First new lanes of Hal Qormi Road will be opened in coming days, so that we can rebuild the existing lanes as well," IM said.

This morning, traffic was slow in the south as flyover beams were being installed.
