By his own yardstick, Joseph Muscat should resign too – Adrian Delia

Tuesday, 26 November 2019, 12:08 Last update: about 8 years ago

By his own yardstick, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat should follow in the footsteps of Keith Schembri and also resigned his post, Opposition Leader Adrian Delia said today.

Speaking on his party’s media, Delia said that in the past legislature Muscat had forced two members of his Cabinet to go because people under their direct responsibility committed a mistake.

He said that Manwel Mallia was forced to leave after his driver was involved in a shooting incident, while Michael Falzon was forces to resign after what one member of his secretariat had done in connection with government property.

Now that Schembri has resigned, the PM should take responsibility for what his chief of staff’s behaviour must also resign, Delia said.

We have experienced two dramatic weeks, Delia said, which started off nearly four years ago when it had been revealed that Schembri and Minister Konrad Mizzi had opened a company in Panama.

There followed a series of events, including reports compiled by the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit which were not investigated by the police, which culminated when it was revealed that Yorgen Fenech was the owner of 17 Black. Fenech is now under arrest.

The Prime Minister has said that he was staying on as PM as a sign of stability, Delia said, but it is his presence as head of government that is causing instability.

He has no other way but to resign, Delia said.
