Only if Joseph Muscat resigns can we reclaim our country - AD

Sunday, 1 December 2019, 11:26 Last update: about 5 years ago

It is only the Prime Minister's resignation that will bring about the start of a process to reclaim back our country, Alternattiva Demokratika said on Sunday.

“Joseph Muscat still has not accepted the inevitable: the glaringly obvious fact that his position is untenable since he has protected the corrupt persons in his inner circle. Muscat's behaviour sends the message that corruption is tolerated and that corrupt persons are in control of the Prime Minister.”

AD accused the PM of having “abused” an already weak Constitution. “He made use of all his discretionary powers and blatantly used his office to favour certain people. He made the most of the extremely weak checks and balances on public administration to exercise his power.  Only his resignation may put the public's mind at rest that investigations on the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia are not compromised and that justice is done and seen to be done. Only his resignation will help to restore, albeit very slowly, faith in our state institutions.”

AD Chairperson Carmel Cacopardo said:"AD insists that it is only the Prime Minister's resignation that will bring about the start of a process to reclaim back our country, a country scarred by the glaring lack of ethics in politics. Alternattiva Demokratika hopes that this process leads to the necessary and overdue changes to the Constitution such that state institutions are strengthened. We must make sure that no Prime Minister can abuse his position. We must make sure that the big political parties, and all other parties, are not dependent on big business. We must make sure that this country has a well-functioning and representative Parliament. Alternattiva Demokratika will continue insisting on these and other proposals to strengthen democracy as it has done for the past 30 years."
