Information and Data Protection Commissioner Saviour Cachia has launched an investigation into a reported security leak involving the personal data of 337,384 voters.
MaltaToday reported today that the data was being held by a Maltese IT company and it was exposed without security. The data reportedly includes id numbers, names, addresses, gender, phone numbers and dates of birth. Screenshots of the breach were posted on Reddit and Twitter.
The newspaper reports that the database was held by software developer C-Planet IT Solutions, in a folder called VotingDocumentSystem.
Justice Minister Edward Zammit Lewis issued a statement this afternoon, saying that he took note of the report and ascertained that the Commissioner is launching an investigation according to law.
