A biker died and another was seriously injured early this morning when the two bikes they were riding were involved in a road accident with two cars.

The accident took place on the Regional Road in St Julian's just after midnight, the police said.

The biker who died is Ian Camilleri, aged 39, of Birkirkara, and he was riding a BMW bike. He was certified dead on site.

The second biker, aged 40 of Hamrun, was seriously injured. He was riding a Triumph bike.

The two cars involved in the accident were a Suzuki and a Honda Accord, respectively driven by a 35-year-old Ethiopian man resident in Marsa and a 25-year-old Syrian man who lives in Zebbug.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the Suzuki driver lost control of the vehicle, the police said. The BMW bike, being driven in the same direction, hit the vehicle from the back while the other biker skidded. The driver of the Honda, to avoid impact with the others, crashed into a barrier, the police added.

Neither of them were injured.

Magistrate Victor Axiaq is leading an inquiry.

On Monday, biker Frank Aloisio died in a traffic accident on the Coast Road while another biker was seriously injured in Naxxar on Wednesday afternoon.
