What is thought to be a wartime shelter has been found during roadworks in Pieta', Infrastructure Malta said.

A rock-cut passageway with religious icons carved into its walls was unearthed during the works.

The infrastructure agency said it is in talks with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage to conduct further studies and identify the best methods to preserve it for future generations.

This was the latest in a series of historical finds made during infrastructural works in recent weeks.

An undisturbed tomb, probably dating back to Punic times, was found in Tarxien last month.

A few days ago, shards of pottery and other archaeological remains were found during roadworks in Rabat.
