Ministry for Energy and Water Management Michael Farrugia is not interested in contesting the post of Labour Party deputy leader as he believes that a younger generation should be in place.

"I've been asked time and time again, I was asked if I was interested in the leadership contest, I said no and now I'm also not interested in contesting for party deputy leader."

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that Chris Cardona handed in his resignation letter to the party.

He said the process to elect a new deputy leader has already started, with an extraordinary general meeting to be held in the second week of July.

When asked why he is not interested in the position, Farrugia said that now is the time for younger generation to come forward and take care of the party. "It is important that we have a younger generation, to being new ideas to a party, which it seems will be in government for a long time."
