Prime Minister Robert Abela said today that Chris Cardona has resigned as deputy leader of the Labour party.
Speaking to journalists outside his office in Valletta, Abela said he had been informed that a resignation letter had been sent to the party.
A general conference to elect a new deputy leader will be held in the second week of July, Abela said.
Earlier this morning, Cardona refused to comment on his resignation.
Footage uploaded by NET News shows Cardona stating that he has no comments to make when asked whether he will be resigning or not.
On Tuesday, Abela said that he had asked Cardona to resign from his post, and that this resignation would arrive in the "coming hours".
Cardona has been facing calls for his resignation from the party ever since his name cropped up in the compilation of evidence against Yorgen Fenech in the case of the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
He denies all allegations.

Cardona has denied all the allegations, stating that they are lies and that he was being framed.
However, pressure has still been mounting on him to step aside from the party, and hence politics for good.
Abela was first asked about Chris Cardona two weeks ago, where he said that he was convinced that Cardona would take all the necessary decisions so that no damage is done to the Labour Party.
After playing coy however, Cardona finally said, when contacted by The Malta Independent, that he would not be resigning from the party.
This seems to have forced Abela's hand - yesterday he told MaltaToday that he had asked Cardona to resign and that he would receive this resignation in the coming hours.
24 hours later, however, no such resignation has materialized, leading to conclusions that Cardona himself is refusing to step aside.
