Labour MPs have backed former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, while it was also revealed that the former Prime Minister was not discussed during Tuesday’s Labour Party Executive meeting.

The Party’s Executive met on Tuesday night in a meeting which culminated in Konrad Mizzi being dismissed from the party’s parliamentary group.  However, Muscat – who did not attend the meeting – retains his place in the party.

Muscat and Mizzi had been facing calls to resign or be removed given recent revelations in court regarding the Enemalta Montenegro wind farm. Mizzi was kicked out of the PL, however Muscat remains. The deal took place when Muscat was Prime Minister.

Government ministers and backbenchers were asked whether Joseph Muscat should remain part of the PL Parliamentary Group.

Environment Minister Aaron Farrugia said decisions were taken yesterday, and the Executive took a decision regarding Konrad Mizzi yesterday. He said Joseph Muscat was not discussed in yesterday’s meeting.

He was asked whether the Parliamentary Group had known that Muscat had called Keith Schembri to stop Yorgen Fenech from leaving Malta, and whether the Group is comfortable that Muscat did that rather than call the police. He said that information is coming out in court and it makes sense to let all information come out and then decide then. He said that he did not know about the phone call.

Deo Debattista and Alex Muscat said that do not see a reason as to why Muscat shouldn’t form part of the group. Anthony Agius Decelis said that Muscat gave a big contribution for the country to move forward, and said that he will decide his own future.

Transport Minister Ian Borg said that Joseph Muscat won his Parliamentary seat with the largest number of votes in Malta’s electoral history. “I think I am nobody to tell him what to do. He has a large mandate. I am pleased to have served in his government and that is the opinion of the majority of the people.”

Justice Minister Edward Zammit Lewis said that he has no doubt that Joseph Muscat did a great job from 2013 onwards, and no doubt that at “the opportune moment he will see things, do the best for him, the party, and the country”, adding that he has faith in him to make the “best decision”.

Roderick Galdes said that he thinks that Joseph Muscat is a politically valid person and that he thinks that the Prime Minister made his position very clear after Tuesday’s meeting.

Finance Minister Edward Scicluna meanwhile walked past journalists and did not answer.

PN MP Mario de Marco meanwhile was asked whether Delia should be removed over the allegations he is currently facing, given that while in the past the PN has argued that ministers facing allegations should resign. The MP said that Delia denied the allegations.
