Update: Therese Comodini Cachia in meeting with the President

Friday, 10 July 2020, 15:22 Last update: about 5 years ago

Therese Comodini Cachia was at San Anton Palace, meeting with the President of Malta George Vella on Friday afternoon, The Malta Independent can confirm.

Comodini Cachia is the MP chosen by her colleagues as having their faith over PN leader Adrian Delia.

She was accompanied by fellow MP Karol Aquilina.

After emerging from the meeting, MP Toni Bezzina arrived at the Palace. The President is currently meeting all of the opposition MPs after the process for Delia's removal was kicked off on Thursday.

17 MPs and two MEPs voted against Delia’s leadership last Tuesday, while 11 MPs voted in support of him. Delia however has refused to step down, leading to Chris Said and Claudette Buttigieg going to the President on Thursday to start the process for Delia’s removal.

The President can, as per the Constitution, cite Article 90 (4) and remove Delia from the post of Opposition leader if he has lost the faith of the majority of the Opposition bench in Parliament.

Those who have lost faith in Delia have to nominate someone in his stead, and on Thursday it emerged that Comodini Cachia’s name had been put forward as Delia’s alternative.

President Vella has been meeting PN MPs throughout the day, having already met PN leader Adrian Delia – who still refuses to step down – on Thursday.

The currently ongoing process has kicked off an ugly rift in the PN. One of the MPs opposing Delia – David Thake – has said that they were trying to remove a “monster” who was trying to drive the party into the wall, while another Edwin Vassallo, one of the MPs who supported Delia, has said that if the process continues, resignations or the dissenting MPs becoming independent MPs is inevitable.
