Over the past five years, the government showed its vision and that it has faith in Maltese products by investing €8 million into the abattoir, the Prime Minister has said, while announcing new investment in the facility.

Throughout this period, 60 different projects regarding improvements and restoration took place, Prime Minister Robert Abela has said while visiting the site.

The government, it was announced, will make a substantial investment to improve efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of production. This investment includes a quarter of a million euros to install 700 solar panels to maximise electrical production in the smallest possible space.

The PM also announced that as part of the government's vision for Malta to be carbon-neutral by 2050, the abattoir sill invest in a project that would see the end of heavy fuel oil use.

Abela spoke of the continued provision of red meat during the Covid-19 pandemic, and spoke of its importance.

Agriculture Minister Anton Refalo said that  the investment in solar panels reduce the electricity consumption of the abattoir by a third.
