Melvin Theuma suicide attempt on the agenda of PN parliamentary group meeting, Delia says

The attempted suicide of murder middleman Melvin Theuma is on the agenda of the PN parliamentary group meeting which is currently ongoing, PN leader Adrian Delia told journalists on Wednesday.

The meeting was called late last night, after news emerged that Theuma, who is the middleman in the Daphne Caruana Galizia assassination and received a presidential pardon to tell all about the case, had attempted to kill himself in his residence in Swieqi.

Delia described last night’s events as “dramatic and tragic”, noting that people had expressed their fear and preoccupation over the situation.

He said that they will wait not only for the police, but also for health authorities on what they see as the cause of this event, but noted that there is an element of politics involved because the system to protect a key witness fundamental to major criminal proceedings failed.

He also noted that there had been no statement thus far from the Prime Minister or Home Affairs Minister, noting that he would like to see the country’s leadership at least give some direction in this regard.

“It is a development which we have to understand, discuss and plan our position accordingly with a sense of caution”, Delia said before walking inside for the meeting.

The latter part of Delia’s statement is especially notable since the PN has already issued an official statement related to last night’s events.

In that statement, which was signed by Beppe Fenech Adami, Karol Aquilina, and Jason Azzopardi, the PN called for the resignation of Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri over his failure to protect Theuma.

The statement also made no mention whatsoever of the news released by police that the evidence on the scene pointed towards the wounds having been self-inflicted, instead choosing to focus on how criminality was continuing to take over the Maltese islands – seemingly implying that a crime took place.

The developments, the statement said, “once again confirms how criminality has taken over our country’s institutions and is doing what it wants.”

It remains to be seen how far the discussion will actually get in the parliamentary group, with PN MP and leader of the dissenting group of MPs Therese Comodini Cachia saying that they would discuss nothing but Delia’s removal from the party’s leadership.
