The Hamrun San Gejtanu march, which normally attracts thousands of people, has been cancelled.

The decision was made on Wednesday, after Malta’s number of active Coronavirus cases increased to 112.

On Wednesday, Health Authorities announced 12 new cases, (not including the 65 migrants), five of which attended the Santa Venera festa last week.

The feast would have taken place on Sunday 9 August, but Hamrun’s band clubs, St Joseph and St Gaetan band club have released a joint statement announcing that the march is cancelled.

“With a strong sense of responsibility towards the community and country, the Association agreed to cancel the morning march planned for the feast of San Gejtanu, which was to take place on Sunday 9 August in the streets of Hamrun” read the Facebook statement. At the time of writing, the club has not decided whether to cancel indoor celebrations, as discussions are still ongoing.

The statement continued to highlight that the decision was very difficult and was also an unpopular decision, after all the work contributed to the feast; however they decided to cancel the feast for the safety of thousands of festa-goers.

Sliema’s San Girgor band club has also announced it will be putting off the celebrations.
