The rumoured record number of cases which Malta was meant to have registered in the last 24 hours was actually down to a number of re-tests on people who tested positive for the virus two weeks ago.

Rumours spread like wildfire – not least due to a statement by the Medical Association of Malta and by news provided on a page which claims to provide exclusive information about Covid-19 in Malta – saying that Malta was going to see a record number of over 70 new cases of Covid-19 today.

However, the official figures revealed that there were 49 cases of Covid-19 registered in the last 24 hours out of a record number of tests.

Health Authorities have said that there were 22 positive tests besides the 49 which were repeat tests carried out on people who tested positive two weeks ago in order to check whether they have recovered, something which has been standard practice throughout most of the pandemic in Malta.

In a statement published with today’s case numbers, the Health Ministry appealed for responsibility in such tough moments and to avoid undue speculation and sharing of fake news which may alarm people for no reason.
