The government's annual budget for the coming year, Budget 2027, will allocate a sum of over €370 million to the Ministry for Energy, the Environment and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour, its Minister, Miriam Dalli, said on Friday.
Minister Dalli said that some of the main priorities that this large capital allocation will be used for are to grant the nation a more reliable electricity supply, greater investment in clean energy, stronger water infrastructure, and more open spaces for families.
She said that, besides the central priorities pertaining to the energy and environment sectors, the government's financial plan for the upcoming year "will continue to combine the protection of families from international pressures with strategic investments in Malta's future."
"We are protecting families today while building a stronger Malta for tomorrow," Minister Dalli said.
According to the Minister, the government's policy is to protect families from today's pressures while investing in the infrastructure that the Maltese islands require for its future needs.
In the energy sector, work to bolster the electricity distribution network will continue by adding more substations, cables, and distribution centres. Simultaneously, the government aims to keep advancing its strategic projects, such as the second interconnector, battery energy storage systems, and the development of new renewable energy sources.
Schemes supporting families to invest in clean energy and improve energy and water efficiency will all be extended, Minister Dalli said, so that everyone can have an opportunity in Malta's environmental transition.
For the environmental sector, the government looks to continue investing in modern waste management systems, nature conservation, and in the creation of more open spaces. The latter includes the development of national parks at Fort Campbell, White Rocks, and Manoel Island.
In the water sector, investments will focus on increasing production capacity, modernising infrastructure, and improving wastewater treatment. The expansion of the New Water network will also continue, promoting the sustainable use of water resources.
Minister Dalli stated that these investments are designed to ensure that economic growth translates into tangible benefits for families around the country.
"A country's success is not measured solely by economic growth, but by the extent to which that growth improves people's lives," she said, "We are investing in better services and infrastructure, a more attractive environment and a more sustainable future for generations to come."
