Government remains mum on White Rocks development

The government has remained mum on the White Rocks development deal, not answering questions sent by The Malta Independent.

The development of the White Rocks site has been in limbo for a number of years, with many questioning whether it will ever go through. The site in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq covers an area of 450,000 square metres, which includes the complex built by the British Forces in the 1960s.

The latest plans for the White Rocks site were announced back in January 2018, when it was said that the White Rocks Development Consortium wanted to develop the area into a mixed-use complex, which would include a seven-star luxury hotel along with leisure, hospitality, residential and commercial units. However, the deal between the consortium and the government has been in limbo for a number of years, with reports having read that there was disagreement between the two over the price for the site.

Questions were sent to the Economy Ministry on 26 August asking for an update on the White Rocks situation, for information as to the sticking points in the negotiations with the White Rocks Development Consortium and whether the government is considering other options for the site, among others.

No replies were received by the time this newspaper went to print.

On 31 August, The Malta Independent reported that hotelier Tony Zahra, on behalf of the Consortium, said that they remain “fully committed to the development proposal it made to government, having won the international competitive call for proposals issued by government through an open and transparent process which attracted interest from 11 consortia from around the world.”
