The Ministry of Health has confirmed that 14 coronavirus patients have died and not 15 in Malta.

On Wednesday morning, people questioned data which appeared in the official World Health Organisation database, which showed that Malta had experienced 15 deaths from Covid-19 so far.

This newsroom has been informed however that following concerns, the health authorities contacted the WHO in order to understand the incorrect registered figures.

Although the case numbers and deaths published locally did not match the ones registered by WHO, the health ministry confirmed that the official, local, COVID-19 figures are accurate.

Later on Wednesday, a social media group, which claims to provide exclusive information about the Covid-19 pandemic, said that the 15th death was in fact a migrant who died on Wednesday in an escape attempt from the Hal-Far Open Centre.

However, this newsroom is informed that while the migrant was indeed Covid-19 positive at the time, his death has nothing to do with the pandemic on the basis that he died from the serious injuries he sustained during his failed escape attempt.

Malta has had 2,162 cases of Covid-19 since 7 March. 1,760 of those have recovered, and 14 have died.

388 active cases of the virus remain after 63 new cases were registered on Wednesday.
