Andre Galea, the owner of the two pit-bulls which allegedly mauled a 95-year-old woman to death on Monday, has surrendered his dogs, kittens, and other pets to an animal activist, this newsroom is informed.

Whilst the media were informed that Animal Welfare officers had removed dogs from Andre Galea’s residence, in reality animal activist Maxine Borg says that she was the one who raised concern about the wellbeing of the animals.

On Monday, Inez Galea died after being mauled by two pit bulls owned by her grandson, Andre Galea. Galea lives in an apartment above hers and on social media describes himself as a dog breeder specialising in pit bulls.

“I want to ensure that these pets are treated properly and when I saw that Animal Welfare did not attend to them, I decided to take matters into my own hands and speak to Galea myself about the pets”, Borg told The Malta Independent.

Speaking to this newsroom, Maxine Borg said that she visited Galea’s residence after she was concerned that Animal Welfare did not attend to the pets for two days after the accident happened.

Borg spoke to Galea and decided to surrender his pets to her. “All I care about is the conditions and well-being of these animals, which have been left on a roof with no food or water for two days,” she said.

Borg took four pit bulls, four hamsters, two kittens, two cages full of birds and a rooster. Galea also surrendered his Tibetan Mastiff, the same dog which was pictured with Galea in an interview with Times of Malta which was published on Thursday.

In the interview Galea said that he had told his grandmother not to enter his flat alone and how he treated his dogs like his children.

Borg told this newsroom that she did all the necessary contacting to ensure that the animals have a roof over their heads. “Four dogs have gone to Noah’s Ark, whilst other individuals and my own neighbours have helped me to foster these animals. Whilst these large numbers of pets have been taken away from the residence, there still remain a number of dogs on the roof, as Galea told me they are too aggressive towards humans.”

Galea is currently out on police bail.
