Updated: Delia, Grech both eligible to contest PN leadership, election on 3 October

The candidates’ commission of the Nationalist Party has found that both Adrian Delia and Bernard Grech are eligible to contest the election for the PN leadership.

The election will be held on 3 October, it was later announced.

The commission had been tasked with establishing whether incumbent leader Delia and challenger Grech had rhe prerequisites to contest the election.

The commission said that it had been informed about the two candidates on 10 August, and had six weeks in which to complete its exercise. The deadline would have expired next week.

A meeting was held with Delia on 26 August, and one with Grech had been held two days earlier.

The commission also considered due diligence reports it commissioned to a panel of independent experts it appointed as per party statute.

The panel had been made up of Antonio Ghirlando, Mario P. Galea and Clyde La Rosa.

After analysing the reports, the commission is of the opinion that both candidates could contest the election.

For its part, the Electoral Commission said that nomination will open on Sunday at noon and close on Friday 18 September at noon. Each nomination must be seconded by three MPs, five members of the College of Councillors, 10 members of the executive committee, 50 members of the general council and 50 party members.

The election will be officially held on 3 October, but the commission has established ther voting can take place on 25, 26, 30 September and 1 and 1 October.

Membership can be renewed until 23 September at 10am.
