Siemens Italia CEO to visit Malta on Electrogas - reports

Thursday, 24 September 2020, 14:55 Last update: about 5 years ago

Siemens Italia CEO Claudio Picech is expected to visit Malta on Monday to discuss the Electrogas plant, MaltaToday reports.

Siemens is one of the shareholders of Electrogas. The visit comes days after the announcement that Gasan Enterprises is looking to pull out of the Electrogas consortium, which owns and runs the new gas-fired power station in Delimara.

“We declare, publicly and unequivocally, that if there is substance to the allegations of corruption in relation to the project, we had absolutely nothing to do with it: we did not participate in it, we did not support it, we did not condone it and we did not know about it. And if it did happen, we condemn it without reservation and trust that justice will be served”, Gasan said in a statement on Wednesday.

“We are mortified and shocked that links are being drawn between this project and the brutal assassination of Mrs. Daphne Caruana Galizia. All our sympathies remain with the family of Mrs. Caruana Galizia, and, together with all right-minded people, we look forward to the successful prosecution and conviction of all those who were involved in this terrible act,” the Gasans said.

Yorgen Fenech, the person accused of being the Mastermind behind the assassination, used to be involved in Electrogas.

Meanwhile, PN MP Jason Azzopardi has filed Parliamentary Questions to the Prime Minister and the Energy Ministry over the Siemen’s CEO visit. Parliament is currently in recess and so the response would not be given until it resumes.

“Since a high-up Siemens delegation arrives in Malta this coming weekend, and as such the CEO of Siemens Italy arrives on Monday for two days, can you say: 1) with which government or government entity officials did they ask to meet with? 2) when was the request for these meetings made and who asked for them? 3) What is the scope of the meetings? 4) is it true that these meetings are tied with the Gasan’s Electrogas declaration? 5) Does the government want to cancel the corrupt electrogas contract? 6) Are certain Siemens officials under criminal investigation? 7) Were the Siemens officials asked, or were they asked, to meet with the police to provide information about the corrupt Electrogas contract?”
