Watch: ‘I would do it all over again’ Delia says about his experience in politics

Monday, 5 October 2020, 17:42 Last update: about 5 years ago

PN MP and former party leader Adrian Delia would repeat his experience in politics ‘all over again’ despite what it has cost him, he told journalists outside Parliament on Monday.

He was asked whether he would still have gone in for the experience knowing that he has lost quite a lot through this experience both in his personal, professional and political life.

“I would do it all over again. It is true I lost a lot, but I also gained a lot. I made friends, I got to know people, had the privilege to go into people’s homes and they poured out who they are, what they feel. That is an honour and a privilege. I wanted nothing from politics and so I have no regrets or disappointments. I would have lived and died in regret if I had not tried. I tried, I gave it all and I won’t stop giving it all. From a different place and perspective, but with exactly the same energy, passion and belief. For me nothing has changed.”

He spoke as soon as he arrived at Parliament, just after leaving from his meeting with Bernard Grech which focused on his role in the party.

He was asked what his role will be.

Delia said he offered Grech his support and loyalty. “We spoke in general and also about his thoughts.  I think it is a bit premature but I expressed my availability.”

Asked whether he will be on the PN list of candidates in the next general election, he said that this is not something he would decide on his own, but added that he is interested in helping the party in all ways and wherever he can, “and certainly in a general election.”

Asked what he will say to his supporters who have said that they will resign from the party, Delia said that “my message right after the result was clear and nothing has changed.”

Asked whether his presence in the Parliamentary Group is feasible given that many of them voted against him in the confidence vote, he said that the PN Leader invited him to be as participative as possible and said that he will attend tonight’s Parliamentary Group meeting.

Told that some of those who resigned from the party after the election result felt that he was not treated well when he was leader and asked if they should remain part of the party or if he thinks they are right, he said that if they gave their resignation then they gave their answer. He said that while thanking such people who were part of the party for many years and contributed, he said their contribution must be recognised. He said that everyone needs to see if they are comfortable, and see how and where they can give what they can. “Politics is not something you do for remuneration, but because you believe in what you are doing. If someone believes in what they are doing then they will keep doing it.”

He said he gave what he could for three years and that he will continue to do so differently, adding that it does not make a difference whether he is a leader, candidate or anything else, “If I believe in something I will continue believing in it until I die.”

Asked what he thinks the history books will say about him, he said that he wish he would know. “The most important thing is however, that I am at peace with myself. I did everything according to my conscience.” He said the urge for the PN to be there for the people is still there.
