The past week saw a decrease in the number of new Covid-19 cases but also the highest number of Coronavirus deaths, statistician Vince Marmara said in his weekly video blog for The Malta Independent on Sunday.

Ten people who were positive for Covid-19 have died since Monday 26 October.

Marmara said that, when looking at the data on a day-by-day and week-by-week basis, the numbers have gone down over the past week.

The percentage of people who test positive compared to the number of tests performed has also gone down, from 5.1% to 3.2%

The r-factor has decreased and now stands at 1.41.

When comparing the situation in Malta to other European countries, Marmara noted that the number of new cases in Spain, Germany and Italy are increasing at a fast pace. Italy’s first wave looks small compared to what the country is currently experiencing, he said.

Cases in the UK are also increasing consistently, and France has also been experiencing a high number of daily new cases, with numbers also increasing.

Marmara urged people to always follow the advice of the health authorities, particularly on social distancing and the use of masks. “We should always ask ourselves whether what we’re doing can put others at risk. It is important to always consider all the risks and help keep the community transmission rate low.”
