Former government minister Konrad Mizzi has reportedly been released by police after being held overnight by the police under arrest.

TVM reported that Mizzi was released from arrest at around 4:30pm this afternoon under escort by CID officials.  This newsroom can confirm that Mizzi was held by police overnight after being interrogated yesterday evening by financial crime department officers.

His lawyers, Former Magistrate Carol Peralta and lawyer Jean Paul Sammut, returned to the Financial Crimes Investigation Department offices at around 11.30am on Wednesday, but they did not give any comments to the press.

The police, yesterday, would not officially confirm his arrest. "Kindly note that in view of Art 87 of the Police Act, we are not in position to confirm or otherwise such information," the police said in reply to questions sent by The Malta Independent.

It is possible that Mizzi was spoken to about his links with Yorgen Fenech about the Electrogas deal. Fenech is accused of masterminding the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Konrad Mizzi is one of the most controversial and scandal-ridden figures in Maltese politics in the last few years, with his name being tied to multiple government scandals.

He was named in the Panama Papers in 2016, but has also been named in connection with scandals pertaining to the Electrogas power station and the sale of three state hospitals to Vitals Global Healthcare.

He has always maintained his innocence and denied all wrongdoing.

Mizzi was voted out of the Labour Party earlier this year, and currently serves in Parliament as an independent MP.

Former Magistrate Carol Peralta and lawyer Jean Paul Sammut are representing Mizzi.
