Massive 19-metre Christmas tree inaugurated in Ghajnsielem

A massive 19 metre Christmas tree dedicated to those going through difficult times was inaugurated in Ghajnsielem, Gozo on Thursday.

The unique tree stands 19 metres (62 feet) tall, with the widest part measuring 8 metres (26 feet).

Bethlehem f’Ghajnsielem – who usually host a Christmas Village in the Gozitan village – said that the tree is dedicated to “all those people going through difficult times during this particular period that the world is going through.”

A total of 3.3 tonnes of iron was used to construct the tree, which, when laid out amount to around 2 kilometres in length.

The iron is divided into 5,355 pieces and for most of the pieces to be welded together, 30 kilos of welding wire was used. For the tree to be joined, 331 screws and the same number of nuts were used.

On the iron structure, 4,200 washers and 4,500 bottles were placed; over 1,000 tie wraps were also used. Around the tree, there is more than 700 metres of light cables with the total of 7,000 light bulbs.

On the base of the structure, 15 tonnes of cement blocks were placed and it also has more than 120 metres (400 feet) of steel wire as vents. Around the base, there is over 250 metres of wood.

The tree was inaugurated by Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri in the presence of members of the Ghajnsielem local council and the village archpriest Fr. Frankie Bajada.
