Protests against plans for Mriehel flyover justified – Alfred Sant

Former Prime Minister Alfred Sant has again hit out against plans by Infrastructure Malta to build a flyover at Mriehel, using agricultural land.

Last month, “my friend Minister Ian Borg” told us to judge on the idea when the plans are made public, the Labour MEP said on Facebook.

Sant had already criticised the project publicly.

Sant said he studied the plans again and is still convinced that the protests against the project are justified.

Last month, farmers had raised concerns about the project, saying it will eat into fertile agricultural land.

“I see no added value to the flyover proposal, except for the promoters of the Mriehel towers,” he said in reference to a project to build high-rise buildings in the area.

But, Sant added, he “does not want to believe that this is the reason behind the (flyover) proposal.”

How much this can help the promoters of the towers project remains debatable. The best help these could be given is a better organisation of the industrial estate.

Otherwise, there is nothing that justifies the destruction of more agricultural land, Sant said.
