138 new cases of Covid-19 were reported on Tuesday as another two patients died while positive for the virus.

An 80-year-old woman and an 88-year-old man both passed away while positive for Covid-19 at Mater Dei Hospital in the last 24 hours, health authorities said.

It means that 255 people have now died while positive for the virus.

128 people meanwhile have recovered from the virus, meaning that the number of active cases has increased marginally to 2,640.

3,248 swab tests were carried out on Monday, taking the total number of swab tests up to 596,138 so far.

The news comes as the Prime Minister announced that measures specifically for the carnival weekend will soon be announced.

Authorities meanwhile said that 21,172 doses of the vaccine were administered up until Monday. 1,463 people have received both doses of the vaccine.

Health Minister Chris Fearne and PN health spokesperson Stephen Spiteri both received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on Tuesday morning, and encouraged the public to also get jabbed when their chance comes.

Malta has had a total of 16,999 cases so far.  14,104 people have recovered, while 255 have died.
