Update on moratoriums to be announced ‘in the coming days’ – Finance Minister

Wednesday, 3 March 2021, 17:17 Last update: about 4 years ago

More information regarding moratoriums will be announced in the coming days, Finance Minister Clyde Caruana said on Wednesday.

The moratorium was introduced back in April 2020, where people were offered a moratorium on repayments on capital and interest for borrowers who have been negatively affected by Covid-19.

"In the coming days I will be making a public announcement where I will be explaining what we will do as a government," Caruana said.

He did note however that people are finding themselves in a better position, with some of them no longer requiring the moratoriums.

"One of the positive points on moratoriums, there are many who have been repaying them as they find themselves able to do so."

"I am also informed that there are only a few people who do not afford to do so, and the banks are voluntarily providing an extension of moratoriums till the end of the year.”

“However, as a government we are still looking at diverse modes of action so that we make it easier for the commercial sector in order to give them a breather -- even those that are managing but are struggling to do so, so that we assure the viability of their businesses in the coming months and years."

Minister Caruana remarked that "what is for sure" is that the action the government took in the past regarding moratoriums managed to save a lot of workplaces and businesses."

The minister also pointed out that the length given in terms of moratoriums is dictated by the European Banking Authority, so it is not something the country can solely decide on.
