Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary school to go online from tomorrow

Tuesday, 9 March 2021, 12:45 Last update: about 4 years ago

Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary school will move to online schooling as from Wednesday until the end of this month, the school announced on Tuesday.

In a statement given by the school administration, they announced that as of 10 March the school will be giving all lectures and tutorials online.

This decision was taken after the school sent an official request for all lectures and tutorials to go online to the Ministry of Education. Minister Justyne Caruana has approved the request. The decision itself was requested by a whole host of students who attend the school.

The online lectures will be in effect till 30 March and both first and second year students will be abide by the new regulations.

The decision comes as Covid-19 cases on the island remain high, and as calls for a move to online schooling increase.

In reaction to the news in fact, one of the teachers' unions - the UPE - said that common sense had prevailed at the sixth form school.

" The UPE is relieved to see common sense prevail under the current circumstances, and to see that students themselves have taken the situation in hand to pursue their studies safely. The union is equally pleased to see that the ministry has understood that the hazard to our students’ health is significant enough to justify this shift, and has endorsed it as a viable and effective mode of education which will ultimately bear fruit", the union said.

" At this point however, the union cannot help but wonder why this approach was not extended to all educational institutions, given that this same hazard exists and persists everywhere regardless of age-group, educational level and locality. The union applauds the proactivity shown by these students and encourages others in the same predicament to do likewise, and to stand together and voice their concerns as one, in an attempt to curb the escalating numbers of Covid-19 cases, while still securing their educational progress without possibly compromising their health."
