821 people currently in prison

There were 821 people detained within the Corradino Correctional Facility in February 2021, the majority of whom - 763- were men.

The information was tabled in Parliament by Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri, in response to a set of parliamentary questions posed by PN MP Beppe Fenech Adami.

The information showed that there are a total of 469 cells in the facility, 263 of which are single bed cells, 206 are double bed cells and 15 are dormitories.

In total, the facility has 927 beds

Asked how many people are being kept in the facility under preventative arrest, the minister said 278.

In terms of age groups. 40 inmates are aged between 18 and 20, 248 are aged between 20 and 30, 235 are aged between 30 and 40, 165 are aged between 40 and 50, and the rest are over 50.

457 of the prisoners are not of Maltese nationality.
