Rector’s election 2021: Alfred J. Vella re-elected rector of the University of Malta

Professor Alfred J. Vella has been re-elected by the Council as the Rector of the University of Malta, and will be leading the University for another five-year term.

This announcement comes following the news that two names had been submitted by Council members by the nomination deadline of 11 March 2021.

Prof. Vella was re-elected after Council members cast their vote following a detailed presentation on the future of the University by both candidates.

Rector's second term in office commences on 1 July 2021.

Prof. Vella was born in Cospicua in November, 1950. He graduated with a B.Sc. in 1971 and a M.Sc. in 1975 from the University of Malta, and a Ph.D. in organic geochemistry in 1984 from the Colorado School of Mines (USA).

After having joined the University of Malta in 1987, where he started researching the area of environmental chemistry, Prof. Vella served as the Head of the Department of Chemistry and later elected Dean of the Faculty of Science.

He served as Pro-Rector for Academic Affairs for 10 years between 2006 and 2016, after which he started his journey as the 81st Rector of the University of Malta.
