The plans for the Covid-19 remembrance garden will be announced shortly, the Health Ministry told The Malta Independent.

Last Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne announced via a tweet that the government is planning to erect a grove to commemorate all those in Malta who lost their lives to Covid-19.

The announcement was made on the first anniversary of Malta’s first Covid-related death – a 92 year-old Gozitan woman who passed away on 8 April 2020.

This newsroom contacted the Health Ministry to ask when and where the grove would be erected.

In response, it replied that the “plans for the Covid-19 remembrance garden are being finalized and will be published shortly”.

It added that “the project will involve the active participation of MCAST students in the setting up and maintaining of the garden”.

The location of the garden was not disclosed.

There have thus far been 403 Covid-related deaths in Malta. Superintendent of Health Charmaine Gauci confirmed during her weekly briefing last Friday that there has been a drop in patients being admitted to hospital for the virus since the latest round of Covid measures were introduced.
