PN MEP Roberta Metsola shared a heart-breaking letter which she said that she received from a six-year-old Maltese boy, who described how some children at his school were going hungry because their parents could not afford food for them.

In the handwritten letter, the boy says that he is writing the letter to speak to Metsola about something which is important to him.

“Some kids do not have lunch at school. Their parents do not have money to buy food.  Can you please do something to help?”, the boy writes.

Metsola said that she called the boy as soon as she got the letter and promised to bring up the issue.

“The pandemic has had a devastating impact on so many people and has been particularly difficult on children”, she wrote on Facebook.

“Behind every job, every business, is a person, a family, who relies on it. Many are facing an uncertain future. SMEs and retail have been hit hard and entire sectors like hospitality, tourism, performance arts and so many more are suffering”, she added.

“We need to do more, much more, to support families going through difficult times - and we can all do our bit by buying local products from local businesses....and keep encouraging children to speak out about the issues they see.”

Amongst the numerous comments and reactions was one from former Labour MEP Marlene Mizzi.

She asked the family to get in touch with her as the head of the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation so that they could assist to make sure that the family could have enough food on the table.
