Small crowd of anti-mask protestors gather in Sliema

Sunday, 2 May 2021, 12:26 Last update: about 4 years ago

A small crowd of people protesting against the wearing of face-masks gathered in Sliema on Sunday.

Some protestors held placards heralding phrases such as “No Mask. No Forced Vax” and “Stand For Freedom”.

It is currently illegal to leave the house without wearing a face-mask – a measure put in place months ago to stem the tide of Covid-19 cases.

Vaccinations in Malta are not forced and are not compulsory – although Malta leads the way in the vaccination programme across Europe.

Police were on site to enforce social distancing among the protesters, most of whom were wearing some form of mask or visor.

Health authorities in both the United States and in the European Union have recommended that face mask regulations can be relaxed for those who have been fully vaccinated.

It is not clear thus far whether Malta will be following such advice.

Public gatherings of over four people are also currently illegal in Malta.
