A Private Member’s Bill that aims to decriminalise abortion in Malta has been hailed as “historic” by pro-choice groups and described as “shocking” and “deceitful” by the pro-life lobby.
The Bill was presented in Parliament by independent MP Marlene Farrugia on Wednesday evening.
It was welcomed by the Women’s Rights Foundation, whose members were waiting to meet Farrugia outside the House of Representatives.

Pro-life group LifeNetwork Foudnation said it was “shocked” by the development.
Shocked beyond belief. The law is there to make a statement. Decriminalisation means that abortion is not wrong. Decriminalisation is the platform to bring in abortion in Malta.
It is very clear. Do not be deceived,” it said.

Former Opposition Leader Adrian Delia said he respects every woman as a person, as a human. “Just as I respect every person who is still just a baby in the womb.”
The value of life is “inalienable”, he said, adding that politics for him are based on values, not on votes. “This is what we stand for.”

Valletta Cultural Agency and One Productions chairman Jason Micallef told Marlene Farrugia to “get stuffed,” adding that she does not deserve better.
Many, he said, were playing the progressives on very serious issues without a serious discussion.
“Legalisation of cannabis, abortion … what’s next?” he asked.
