Archbishop Charles Scicluna delivered an indirect response to independent MP Marlene Farrugia's bill proposing the decriminalisation of abortion, stating that the womb is a sacred place.

During his homily in mass, the Archbishop said: "The womb is a sacred place, which should be a source of life and not where killing takes place." The dignity of women cannot be safeguarded by killing innocent children, he said.

Scicluna sought reason in comparing animal cruelty to the proposed decriminalisation bill. Harsh penalties are what people will be faced with if they are found guilty of animal cruelty charges, he said. This was a step forward in animal care, Scicluna added "but don't you think that if we are now allowed to kill the unborn, it will be a big step backwards not forwards".

Scicluna also reassured mothers that the church will stand with them in moments of difficulty, stating: "may we always choose life, the life of mothers and their offspring".

In his final statement Scicluna said that "human life deserves our respect and protection" while appealing for the defending of mothers and human life.

In a final appeal, Scicluna pleaded with the people in authority to use their authority for the good of society.
