Long-serving Labour media journalist Felxi Agius has passed away, the Labour Party said in a statement.

Born on 21 March, 1948, Agius obtained a diploma in journalism from the Berlin Institute of Journalism and started his career some 50 years ago, joining the then PL newspaper Iz-Zmien.

He later moved to the Union Press as a sub-editor of Malta News before being named editor of l-Orizzont, a position he occupied for more than 11 years.

He then was appointed executive editor of the PL newspaper Kullhadd, a position he held until he retired.

The PL said it recognised his sterling work in journalism and to foster socialist principles.

The PL expressed its condolences to Agius' family.

Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, in a long post on Facebook, described Agius as one of his most genuine and honest friends.

Another former Prime Minister, Alfred Sant said Agius was a long-standing friend who remained loyal to his principles.

The Institute of Maltese Journalists also saluted Agius.
