In the LGC Toxicology Case Study performance report issued in April 2021, which included 21 participating laboratories, Mater Dei’s Toxicology Lab obtained the highest overall performance score, a statement read.

“Samples of the External Performance Evaluation scheme were sent to various participating laboratories, and also received in Malta from LGC in the UK, followed by analysis and clinical interpretation in the MDH Toxicology Lab by Mr Jonathan Vella and Dr Michelle ( k/a Mikhaila) Muscat.”

LGC Standards has its headquarters in the UK and provides quality testing to various subscribed laboratories around the globe. The Toxicology Labs are part of the Pathology Department lead by Dr Christopher Barbara.

Mater Dei Toxicology laboratories participate in Clinical Toxicology External Quality testing schemes. The most recent performance report was for the case study of a gentleman who had recently lost his son due to a car accident and was found shivering and exhibiting jerky movements. Upon laboratory analysis of an extensive list of substances, it was found that paroxetine was well above the normal therapeutic range and in the toxic range, with co-consumption of alcohol. Prescription medications taken in excess or overdose can be harmful to the patient, hence the importance of taking medications as prescribed.

Paroxetine is an antidepressant belonging to the class of SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It is a medication often seen to be prescribed, where indicated, for certain conditions such as for example depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Brand names include ‘Seroxat’ and ‘Paxetin’.
