Former Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil has said that the President of Malta George Vella should resign from his post.
Busuttil, who currently occupies the position of Secretary-General of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, said: "Such is the scale of degeneration of state institutions: even the President of Malta was a Minister in Joseph Muscat's disgraced cabinet and shares collective responsibility for the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia. If he truly respects his Office, then he too must go."
Busuttil's post is in reference to the recently released report by the public inquiry into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, which found that the Maltese state "has to bear responsibility" for the assassination due the culture of impunity that emanated from the highest levels of government.
The inquiry had also taken aim at the Cabinet for its inaction on a number of issues that had emerged in the run up to the assassination, among other things.
