The MSPCA is warning owners of animals in the Gharb-San Lawrenz area to be careful if they allow their pets to roam in the area.

Sausages “with nails embedded in them” have been scattered in these two villages, the MSPCA warned on its Facebook page.

Animals who are lured to the sausages with the smell of the food may easily by harmed when they eat it because of the screws.

“It was brought to our attention that in the area of Gharb/San Lawrenz in Gozo, there have been sausages distributed all over the place with nails embedded in them.

“We condemn this act of cruelty and urge you to pay close attention if you have animals that roam around in the area. Do spread the message around so we can reduce the harm caused from such an irresponsible act.”

In comments to The Malta Independent, Animal Welfare Commissioner Alison Bezzina appealed for information to catch the perpetrators.

"I cannot condemn this cruel and cowardly act enough. If God forbid an animal fell victim of this bait, they would die a torturous death. Anyone with any info can contact my office on [email protected]. Anonymity will be respected," she said.
